PROLAPSE IN POULTRY

Prolapse is a condition where a portion of the hens rectum protrudes from the vent (the opening for egg laying and waste elimination). This condition once it has happened it's very difficult to control and can be life threatening if left untreated. It is relatively common in commercial laying hens caused by a combination of several factors which include:

GENETIC FACTORS Some breeds especially those bred for high egg production are more prone to prolapse because of their genetics.

OBESITY over weight hens are more likely to experience prolapse because the excess body fat puts pressure on the internal organs.

UNBALANCED FEED DIET A diet low in fibre or high in calcium can contribute to prolapse by affecting the consistency of the egg shells or the movement of eggs through the oviduct.

STRESS Stressful conditions such as over crowding, loud noises or sudden changes in feed and the environment can induce prolapse.

EGG SIZE Laying unusually large eggs can strain the reproductive organs and lead to prolapse

Prolaspe in chicken is often as a result of poor management practices. Preventing prolapse involves maintaining a balanced diet, providing proper environmental conditions and managing the overall flocks health. Monitoring your birds for signs of distress and addressing any issue promptly can help reduce the risk of prolapse.

THE RAINY SEASON AND POULTRY FARMING:

The rainy season has direct & indirect effects on feed consumption and the health of birds. These effects vary depending on the specific conditions & management practices present on a poultry farm. Rain can lead to decreased feed consumption and increased health risks in birds due to factors like reduced activity, stress and high disease risk. Here is how the rainy season can impact feed consumption and bird health.

DECREASED FEED CONSUMPTION
During the rainny season, birds are less active reducing their need for energy which in turn reduces the birds demand for feed. Further more the air in the surroundings becomes more humid and temperatures may drop, this makes the birds uncomfortable and leads to a decreased appetite & feed intake

HEALTH ISSUES
Birds experience stress when weather conditions & their environment changes. Stress weakens the immune system and makes birds more susceptible to diseases.

The rainy season also creates favourable conditions for disease causing organisms that are transmitted in air and water.

Rainy weather promotes the growth of parasites like worms which negatively impact the health of birds. Regular deworming and parasite control becomes even more important during the rainy season.

Excessive rainfall can lead to water logging & contamination of water sources increasing the risk of water borne diseases like avian cholera or coccidiosis.

Poultry farmers must take proactive steps to manage these challenges by maintaining dry and clean conditions, adjusting feeding strategies and implementingdisease prevention measures to ensure health and the well being of birds during therainny season. This is by ensuring the shelters are dry and well ventilated, birds have access to clean dry bedding and feed.

Proper nutrition and feeding management are essential to ensure that birds receive the necessary nutrients even during reduced feed intake periods.

The GUT (digestive system) is very important in birds. The GUT plays a vital role in the overall health, growth, and performance of birds. Here are some few functions of the GUT

1.Nutrient Absorption: The gut is the primary site for nutrient absorption in poultry. It is where the breakdown of feed into nutrients, such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals, occurs. Efficient nutrient absorption is essential for growth, egg production, and overall productivity.

2.Immune Function: The gut is an important part of the poultry immune system. It contains a significant portion of the bird's immune cells and helps regulate immune responses. A healthy gut is essential for the body's ability to defend against pathogens and diseases.

3.Feed Efficiency: A healthy gut contributes to better feed efficiency. When the gut is healthy, poultry can efficiently convert feed into body weight or egg production, reducing feed costs and improving profitability for poultry farmers.

4.Gut bacteria: The gut hosts different beneficial microorganisms, often referred to as the gut microbiome. These microorganisms assist in the digestion of feed, produce enzymes, and compete with harmful pathogens. Balanced gut bacteria is crucial for optimal health and growth.

Tomorrow we shall look at the causes & farm practices that compromise GUT HEALTH in poultry.

COCCCIDIOSIS is a parasitic disease that affects a wide range of animals including livestock, poultry and sometimes even humans. It is caused by a protozoa that damages the intestinal lining of the host animal.
Coccidiosis signs and symptoms vary according to severity and commonly include diarrhoea, dehydration, weight loss, decreased appetite and death in severe conditions.

The following are farm practices which increase the likelyhood of coccodiosis at your farm and should be avoided at all times;

1. Poor hygiene. Inadequate cleaning and sanitation of the animal housing and living areas.

2.Over crowding, housing animals in crowded spaces increases the likelihood of infection.

3.Lack of preventive measures, failing to implement bio security and other preventive measures at your farm puts your animals at risk.

4.Poor nutrition, poor nutrition weakens the animals immune system making it susceptible to cocccidiosis, conversely over feeding with certain diets can also stress the digestive system and make animals susceptible to infection.

5. contaminated water and feed

At NUTRINOVA we remind you to prevent and guard against coccodiosis at your farm by making sure your animals get proper nutrition through quality feeding and maintaining proper bio security measures.

Next time, we shall discuss how you can guard and prevent against coccodiosis infections at your farm. Stay tuned

The type of drinkers used in poultry farming can significantly affect water consumption. Different drinkers influence how much water your birds consume, it's cleanliness and accessibility.

NUTRINOVA has carefully selected AUTOMATIC DRINKERS that have several advantages over traditional open water sources. Here are some reasons why farmers prefer automatic water drinkers.

1. REDUCED CONTAMINATION they protect the water from dirt and droppings maintaining a clean water supply reducing the risk of diseases.

2.REGULATED WATER FLOW These drinkers are designed to provide a controlled automatic and reliable water flow preventing surges or leaks.

3.EASY TO CLEAN these drinkers are easy to clean and sanitize.

4.BIRD FRIENDLY DESIGN these drinkers minimize the risks of birds perching on them and their bright red color attracts birds to take more water.

5.DURABLE these drinkers are durable and resistant to corrosion (plastic nature)

VITAMINS & MICRO NUTRIENTS are essential for the well being of your chicken. They are required for normal health & physiological functions like growth, reproduction & maintenance.

If they are insufficient your bird's health, well being & performance are at a very high risk. Chickens commonly have insufficient levels of vitamins & micro nutrients because they cannot be synthesized by their body. To ensure this is not the case, chickens are commonly given supplements to cover this deficit.

At NUTRINOVA we have a range of carefully selected vitamins & micro elements needed for your chickens for better growth, improved health and performance.
