THE RAINY SEASON AND POULTRY FARMING: The rainy season has direct & indirect effects on feed consumption and the health of birds. These effects vary depending on the specific conditions & management practices present on a poultry farm. Rain can lead to decreased feed consumption and increased health risks in birds due to factors like reduced activity, stress and high disease risk. Here is how the rainy season can impact feed consumption and bird health. DECREASED FEED CONSUMPTION During the rainny season, birds are less active reducing their need for energy which in turn reduces the birds demand for feed. Further more the air in the surroundings becomes more humid and temperatures may drop, this makes the birds uncomfortable and leads to a decreased appetite & feed intake HEALTH ISSUES Birds experience stress when weather conditions & their environment changes. Stress weakens the immune system and makes birds more susceptible to diseases. The rainy season also creates favourable conditions for disease causing organisms that are transmitted in air and water. Rainy weather promotes the growth of parasites like worms which negatively impact the health of birds. Regular deworming and parasite control becomes even more important during the rainy season. Excessive rainfall can lead to water logging & contamination of water sources increasing the risk of water borne diseases like avian cholera or coccidiosis. Poultry farmers must take proactive steps to manage these challenges by maintaining dry and clean conditions, adjusting feeding strategies and implementingdisease prevention measures to ensure health and the well being of birds during therainny season. This is by ensuring the shelters are dry and well ventilated, birds have access to clean dry bedding and feed. Proper nutrition and feeding management are essential to ensure that birds receive the necessary nutrients even during reduced feed intake periods.
