COMMON SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STRESS AMONG YOUR FLOCK
When birds are exposed to very high temperatures. They experience various physiological & behavioral changes which causes gut inefficiencies, decreases meat quality, reduces growth and causes death in extreme conditions resulting in losses if not managed well.

Today lets highlight all the possible signs and symptoms of heat stress among your flock.
Note We advice all farmers to monitor temperatures & humidity inside their poultry houses. Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are considered too hot for birds.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
1. Panting & rapid breathing (open beaks) this is usually the first sign birds display when they are trying to cope with heat stress.

2. Slow movement or inactivity among the birds (usually you will see the birds squatting on the floor for majority of the time)

3. Increased water consumption.

4. Decreased feed intake.

5. Weight loss especially in broiler birds

6. Outstretched wings & erect feathers used as a mechanism to release trapped heat

7. Pale combs and wattles

8. Skin color changes

Overcrowding in poultry farming can lead to various problems that affect the health, well-being, and performance of the birds. Some of the key issues associated with overcrowding include:

1.Stress:
Overcrowding causes stress which compromises the immune system, making birds more susceptible to diseases. Stressed chickens may exhibit aggressive behaviors, feather pecking, and cannibalism.

2.Disease Spread:
Overcrowded conditions facilitate the rapid spread of diseases. Bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections can quickly move through a crowded flock, leading to widespread health issues and increased mortality rates.

3.Reduced Growth Rates:
Overcrowded chickens may have limited access to feed and water, leading to reduced growth rates and egg production.

4.Inadequate Ventilation:
Overcrowded poultry houses may experience poor air circulation and ventilation. Inadequate ventilation can result in higher ammonia levels, dust, and heat stress, negatively impacting respiratory health and overall well-being.

To avoid these problems, it's crucial for poultry farmers to adhere to recommended stocking densities. 4 to 6 birds per square metre in layers and 10 to 13birds per square metre in broilers.
