RECOGNISING SIGNS OF WATER CONTAMINATION
Farmers can look for common symptoms in birds that might indicate poor water quality:
• Digestive Issues: Birds may experience diarrhea a sign of bacterial contamination in the water supply.
• Reduced Feed Intake and Poor Weight Gain: Contaminated water discourages birds from drinking, leading to reduced feed intake and poor growth in broilers or decreased egg production in layers.
• Respiratory Issues: High levels of biofilm buildup lead to respiratory problems
PRACTICAL TESTS AND EXAMPLES
• Visual Inspection: observe the color and odor of the water. If water looks murky, has a slimy feel, or has an unusual odor, it’s likely contaminated.
• Swabbing and Testing: Take a swab sample from inside the pipes, particularly around connectors or bends, and test for bacterial presence at a local lab. If a sample shows high bacterial counts, it’s a clear indicator of contamination.
• Adding Dyes to Water Lines: add a food-grade dye to the water lines and observe how quickly it reaches all drinking points. If the dye takes too long, it may indicate clogging or restricted flow, suggesting a need for pipe cleaning.
