WHAT MAKES COCCIDIOSIS COMMON IN BROILER PRODUCTION
Coccidiosis prevents broilers from attaining desired weights and its is one of the most prevalent and economically significant diseases in poultry production worldwide due to the following reasons;
1.Short Life Span: Broilers have a short production cycle (typically 6-8 weeks). This means that new batches of broilers are continuously introduced into the same housing environments contributing to the persistence of coccidiosis parasites.
2.Rapid Growth: The rapid growth rate of broilers stresses their immune system making them more susceptible to coccidiosis infections.
3.High Stocking Densities High stocking densities in commercial operations facilitate the spread of coccidiosis through feces, litter, and contaminated feed or water.
4.Poor litter Management: Broilers are often raised on litter, which can accumulate feces and become a reservoir for cox parasites if not properly managed.
5.Warm and Humid Conditions: Warm and humid conditions in poultry houses are conducive to the multiplication and survival of coccidiosis parasites.
6.Stress Factors: Environmental stressors e.g heat stress, poor ventilation, poor nutrition and overcrowding weaken the birds' immune systems, making them more prone to coccidiosis.
To manage the risk of coccidiosis, broiler producers use several strategies ie. Vaccination, medicated Feeds, sanitation, litter Management, Proper handling and disposal of litter to reduce the risk of coccidiosis accumulation and spread.
Tomorrow we shall explore PRETECT D a natural & cost effective feed additive to prevent and mitigate the adverse effects of coccidiosis in broiler production
