NAVIGATING THE CAUSES OF DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS IN LIVESTOCK
In this 2minute precise & straight to the point article, you will be able to understand gut health & it's functions, the negative consequences of poor gut health and the factors that lead to poor gut health.
What is the gut?
The gut is a special tube that starts from the beak and ends in the cloaca. It's primary function is the conversion & digestion of food into its basic components for absorption and utilization.
The gut is also a home to useful bacteria commly known as the gut microbiota. These useful bacteria prevent the growth of harmful bacteria such as coccidiosis, salmonella & E coli, they also stimulate the development of the immune system.
NOTE Livestock that lack these useful bacteria have been seen to be more susceptible to diseases & have poorly developed immune systems.
Effects of poor gut health
When the gut is compromised, incomplete digestion & absorption of nutrients occurs leading to malabsorption and an imbalance in the gut microbiota affecting the performance and health of the birds. This leads to a negative effect on feed conversion (feeding more and getting no results), losses and a weakened immune system.
Reasons for poor gut health
1.Poor gut development right from hatching
2.Feed change
3.Poor feed quality
4.Feed mycotoxins
5.Environment (lighting, ventilation and temperature)
6.Infections (coccidiosis, salmonella, e coli)
7.Brooding conditions
Over the years, research has led to innovation of sustainable technologies that ensure good health of the gut in livestock right from hatch without excessive use of antibiotics.
