Coccidiosis can affect chickens at any stage of their life, but it is most prevalent between the 8th and 10th weeks when clinical signs become noticeable. Symptoms include bloody and mucus in droppings, decreased egg production, weight loss in mature birds, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and a whitish soiling around the vent area. 2.Coccidiosis spreads through chicken droppings, which contains coccidiosis eggs called oocysts. These eggs can stay on your farm for up to a year waiting for the right conditions to become a problem.. The eggs are often found around feeders, drinkers, in the litter, and on cages, where chickens can ingest them while eating or pecking. 4.The eggs reach the stomach of the bird where they become active and begin multiplying very fast destroying the walls of the small intestines affecting the absorption of nutrients from the feed they consume. This leads to a drop in egg production, loss in weight and death in severe conditions if left unattended. The mature coccidiosis inside the chickens’ small intestines will later hatch eggs in 7-10days which are passed out in the stool and the cycle continues. 5. To treat coccidiosis, antibiotics or vaccines are commonly used to stop the protozoa from harming the small intestines and reproducing. Prevention involves using medicated feed with coccidiostats and maintaining strict biosecurity measures like disinfection and limited farm access.
