THE RAINNY SEASON AND LIVESTOCK FEED
During the rainy season, frequent rain made grain storage areas a problem spot, as the wet air created an ideal environment for mould to grow on stored feed. Unknown to the farmers, these moulds produced harmful substances called mycotoxins, making the feed less nutritious for the chickens. This unnoticed issue could harm the chickens' health, with the continuous rain worsening the quality of the once-good chicken feed. Here are some few pointers to note regards the rainy season and livestock feed.
In the rainy season, the humid conditions encourage mould growth in poultry feed, especially grains, elevating the risk of mycotoxin contamination. These mycotoxins, produced by certain moulds, can threaten poultry health, leading to potential problems like reduced feed intake, poor growth, and other health issues
Feed spoilage during the rainy season is influenced by excess moisture introduced by heavy rainfall and high humidity. This leads to undesirable effects such as clumping, caking, and spoilage of the feed, making it unappealing to poultry and reduced feed intake.
Intense or prolonged rainfall can cause the loss of water-soluble nutrients from feed ingredients, diminishing the overall nutritional quality. This impacts the feed's ability to meet the nutritional requirements of poultry.
Wet feed, prone to clumping and caking with altered texture due to mould and spoilage, becomes less palatable to poultry, potentially resulting in decreased intake and nutritional deficiencies.
To mitigate these negative effects during the rainy season, poultry farmers should implement good management practices, including proper feed storage, ventilation, and monitoring for signs of mould and spoilage.
Additionally, sourcing high-quality feed ingredients and utilizing feed additives that address mycotoxin challenges can help ensure the health and productivity of poultry during adverse weather conditions.
NUTRINOVA is dedicated to enhancing animal nutrition by offering specialized feed additives which include mycoban, minazeal and intratoxin binder designed to combat harmful mycotoxins and ensure the health and well-being of your livestock. Tomorrow we shall look at these additives in detail. Stay tuned
