WHAT IS INFECTIOUS CORYZA Infectious Coryza is a contagious respiratory disease affecting chickens. It is caused by a bacterium. This bacterium affects the upper respiratory tract of chickens, leading to symptoms such as nasal discharge, facial swelling, and conjunctivitis. The disease spreads through direct contact between infected birds. It can also be transmitted indirectly through contaminated feed, water, equipment, and by carrier birds. The percentage of affected birds can be high, but the mortality rate is usually low. However, the disease can have significant economic impacts due to decreased egg production and poor growth rates in affected birds. CLINICAL SIGNS 1.Nasal Discharge 2.Facial Swelling: Swelling of the tissues around the eyes and face. 3.Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva, leading to watery or swollen eyes. 4.Sneezing and Coughing: 5.Decreased Egg Production: Infected hens may experience a drop in egg production. PREVENTION AND CONTROL Vaccination: Vaccines are available for preventing Infectious Coryza. Biosecurity Measures: Strict biosecurity protocols, including quarantine procedures for new birds, disinfection of equipment, and limiting exposure to potentially infected birds, are essential for prevention.
