PEST CONTROL (RED MITES) Red mites can carry harmful bacteria or viruses and transfer them from one bird to another. A severe case of these blood suckers can cause the birds to be anaemic and eventually leading to death. Always inspect places where red mites are likely to hide daily. Red mites can be tracked down by knocking on the cage system, box nest or by scrapping in cracks with a knife while holding a white sheet of paper underneath. In cages, check under the egg protection panel, fastening nuts and gutters. In deep litter systems, check under perches, under slats, in dry droppings, and the laying boxes. Keep on the lookout for birds that are always picking themselves. As the the red mite infection increases it affects egg production since most birds will want to stay away from infected nests leading to more eggs on the floor. These can be broken easily. It is best to control red mites when the poultry house is empty. Clean it well to remove the hiding places such as under piles of manure.
