DID YOU KNOW THAT BROILER PERFORMANCE IS NOT OPTIMIZED BY NONSTOP FEEDING?
LEARN ABOUT THE LIGHTING SCHEDULE FOR BROILERS AND LAYERS
BROILERS
> 23 hours of lighting (23 not 24) is recommended only for the first seven days of broilers.
> Providing broilers with 23 hours of light constantly has a negative effect on Growth rate, Feed intake, Mortality, Processing performance, and Broiler welfare.
> Broiler performance is not optimized by providing 23 hours of light and thus this lighting program is not recommended.
> Broiler performance and welfare are optimized when between 17 and 20 hours of light are given.
> Growth and feed intake are maximized at 20 hours of light.
> The response to daylength does not differ between strains and sexes.
EXAMPLE; Switching off lights from 7:00pm in the evening till 11:00pm in the night for an equivalent of 4 hours of darkness then at 11:00Pm you put the lights back on and throughout the night, which makes 20 hours of light.
LAYERS
> Start pullets with 20 to 22 hours of continuous bright light during the first week of age
> Gradually reduce to 9 to 11 hours of light at 10 to 18 weeks of age
> Increase day length by 1 hour in the 18th week after the chicks attain the right body weight target
> Add 15 to 30 minutes per week (or every two weeks) until 16 hours of total light
> Maintain the 16 hours of light throughout the laying period of the birds.
EXAMPLE; Switch on artificial lighting from 6:30Pm to 10:30Pm to supplement on the days 12hours of natural light to make a total of 16hour of light. Switch off lights at 10:30Pm till natural daylight the next day.
LIGHT MANAGEMENT
The distance between bulbs should be 1.5 times the distance from bulb to the bird level.
Light bulbs should be cleaned often because very dirty bulbs emit less light.
In cage systems the bulbs should be placed in such a way that the light falls on the feed and on the bird.
In deep litter system, the bulb is placed at 7-8’ height whereas in cage
