The high poultry feed prices is hitting poultry processors, poultry feed importers and majorly farmers in Uganda harder. A kilogramme of maize bran has gone up from approximately Ush650 to Ush1750 and that also depends on where you are buying your feeds. This scarcity of poultry feeds has hit the industry so hard forcing some farmers out of business in different parts of the country while others have resorted to selling off immature birds at very low prices. There is also an issue of fake feeds arriving on the market. This fake feed has a huge affect on egg production capacity of layers,and this issue of fake feeds have made many layer farmers run due to losses. Poultry feeds dealers and feed millers have attributed the price hike to the increase in exportation of maize grains to especially Kenya, and the cost of transport from the points of production has also shot up, brought on by the high fuel prices where fuel ranges in 6500 to 8000 per litre. However chicken prices surge 45% in 2 weeks especially in Kampala Uganda as at 15 August, 2022 It is estimated that half of the poultry farms were closed down after farmers incurring continuous losses amid the crisis, which has affected the supply chain against the growing demand. The prices of broilers,and domestic breed chickens has increased by about 45% just 15 days in Kampala as the demand has increased in various social events taking place and many farmers left business leading to a low supply. This has increased market for the few remaining farmers where they sell their products at the price of their own choice. Approximately the price of eggs has also risen from about ugx6500 to ugx14000 which is relatively of a big advantage to the farmer no matter the higher costs of production.
